Breast Augmentation

Breast Augmentation Louisville

Among the many reasons cited by women wanting to enhance their breasts, some of the most common include: achieving symmetry between two different-sized breasts; regaining size and firmness after pregnancy or substantial weight loss; or simply dissatisfaction with the size of their breasts. Breast augmentation through Dr. John Derr is a safe and effective method of improving the breasts’ aesthetic appeal and boosting patients’ self-confidence.

The Breast Augmentation Procedure

A consultation with Dr. Derr is the first step towards breast augmentation. Dr. Derr, of Louisville, Kentucky, will discuss each of your options with you. The location of the incision will be customized to meet your specific needs. It may be located in the crease of the breast, or around the areola (the dark area surrounding the nipple). Also, the breast implant may be placed either in front of or behind the muscle tissue, depending on the thickness of the patient’s skin, the size of the implant, and other considerations unique to your circumstances.

Breast Implant Types

There are two types of breast implants from which to choose: saline and silicone. Silicone implants are filled with silicone gel whereas saline implants have a silicone shell filled with a saltwater solution. Since saline implants can be filled after they are placed, they require a much smaller incision. However, some patients believe that silicone gel implants creates a firmer and fuller shape, with less chance of capsular contracture, a postoperative complication where the breast tissue hardens around the implant. Both implants have their own set of inherent risks and benefits that Dr. Derr will discuss with you during your personal breast augmentation consultation.

Surgical Incision and Placement of Breast Implants

The type of incision, as well as implant methodology, that is utilized will be determined based on a number of criteria, among them: the patient’s health, the type of implant being placed, and the patient’s personal goals. Certain incision techniques are better suited than others, and so Dr. Derr will discuss your options with you prior to your procedure. There are four basic incision types:

  • Inframammary – the incision is made below the breast in the inframammary fold. Most silicone implants are placed using this technique.
  • Periareolar – the incision is made around the areola. This incision can create issues for future breastfeeding.
  • Transaxillary – the incision is made in the armpit. This technique allows for no visible scaring on the breast. (This technique is not utilized by Dr Derr)
  • Transumbilical – the incision is made in the navel. This is the least common approach, as it can make implant placement difficult. (This technique is not utilized by Dr Derr)

Once the incision has been made, Dr. Derr creates a pocket for the breast implant, either above or underneath the pectoral muscle. Women with little breast tissue are advised to have the implant placed below the muscle. Once the pocket is created the implant is then placed, adjustments are made for the best cosmetic appearance and the incision is closed with sutures. Patients rest comfortably for several days following their breast augmentation surgery.

Recovery from Breast Augmentation

Recovery after breast augmentation is fairly easy. Pain, soreness, and swelling are typically most pronounced during the first three days after surgery. Fortunately, you will receive ample medication to control the pain and swelling. The swelling will subside greatly within the first week but will take three to six weeks to completely disappear.
