Non-Surgical Facial Rejuvenation, including BOTOX® Cosmetic – Louisville, Kentucky

There are millions of Americans who would like to improve the appearance of their skin and achieve a natural, youthful look, but do not want to commit to plastic surgery. For these patients, we offer several non-surgical facial rejuvenation options, including BOTOX® Cosmetic, at our Louisville, Kentucky practice. Dr. John Derr can answer all your questions about these procedures and help you decide on one (or more) that’s right for you.

BOTOX® Cosmetic

According to The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, in 2002 and 2003 BOTOX® Cosmetic was more popular than all other surgical and non surgical cosmetic procedures combined. Over one million Americans have used FDA approved BOTOX® Cosmetic. Louisville, Kentucky plastic surgeon Dr. John Derr is proud to offer BOTOX® therapy to all qualified candidates.

What is BOTOX® Cosmetic?

BOTOX® Cosmetic is a purified form of the Clostridium botulinum bacterium, which, when injected into muscles, relaxes them and causes wrinkles and lines to disappear for up to four months. It is usually applied between the brows to the muscles that cause “frown lines.”

What can I expect at the doctor’s office?

When you arrive for a BOTOX® treatment at the Louisville, Kentucky office of Dr. John Derr, we will ask you a few questions about any allergies and current prescriptions (Certain allergies and prescription medicines can preclude a patient from receiving BOTOX® injections.) Then, Dr. Derr will examine your ability to move certain muscles in your forehead and determine the best places to administer the injections.

In a process that lasts about ten minutes, Dr. Derr will make several tiny injections directly into the muscles of the brow. No anesthesia is required; most patients report a sensation like a pinprick.

What are the effects of BOTOX® Cosmetic?

You will be able to resume a normal routine immediately after treatment. Within just a few days, you will see a marked improvement to the frown lines on your face, and these results will most likely last about four months. If you do not return for repeat injections, your frown lines and wrinkles will return.

Dermal Fillers

Dermal fillers work to eliminate wrinkles and folds by filling in the excess skin beneath them. The results are not as long-lasting as cosmetic surgery procedures such as facelift and browlift, but are ideal for people who do not need extensive treatment.

Restylane®

Restylane® is a dermal filler used to treat such facial areas as smile lines and lip lines. Unlike other dermal fillers, the active ingredient in Restylane® is non-animal-based hyaluronic acid, or NASHA. Hyaluronic acid is a natural substance that already exists in the human body. NASHA is completely biocompatible with the body; since it is non-animal-based, there is no risk of animal-based allergic reactions.

Restylane® is currently FDA-approved for use in the treatment of facial wrinkles and folds. To fill these areas, Dr. Derr will make several tiny injections of Restylane® into the desired areas. You will see positive results immediately. Side effects may include temporary redness and swelling.

Most people report that their Restylane® treatment lasts longer than traditional collagen injections. This makes it possible for treatments to be scheduled nearly six months apart.

Radiesse™

Radiesse™ is a dermal filler that is composed of microscopic calcium particles. The particles are suspended in gel and injected into the desired areas. Radiesse™ is an extremely safe material that has been used for years in dental reconstruction and vocal cord treatment.

The chief benefit of Radiesse™ is that it lasts longer than many other dermal fillers, up to a year or more. Results may vary based on metabolism and the frequency with which the injected muscles are used.

Juvéderm®

Juvéderm® is a dermal filler used to instantly smooth away wrinkles around the mouth and nose. The natural-looking results achieved in a single treament can last up to a year. Juvéderm® results will vary between patients.

Perlane™

Perlane™ is a dermal filler, similar to Restylane™, used to lift and add volume to the face, reducing the signs of fine lines and wrinkles. Perlane™ results vary between patients, but typiclaly last between six and nine months.

Artefill®

Artefill® is a nonresorbable dermal filler; meaning that Artefill® provides permanent support for wrinkle correction around the mouth. Artefill® is different from other dermal fillers in that it does not require repeat injections to maintain the results.

Fat Injections

Fat injections, also known as autolipo injections, are normally used to fill in such facial imperfections as laugh lines, forehead wrinkles, and sunken cheeks. Because it uses fat from your body, the fat injection procedure avoids the possibility of allergic reaction that comes with treatments such as collagen injections.

The procedure for fat injections is simple. Dr. Derr will administer local anesthesia to both the donor and the recipient sites. Then, he will remove fat from the donor site (usually the thigh or buttock) with a cannula, the same instrument used in liposuction. The fat withdrawn will then be injected into the desired site with a smaller needle.

Since the body has a tendency to absorb some of the fat within the first few weeks after treatment, Dr. Derr will have to overfill the area somewhat. This may give the appearance of puffiness, but it will subside over the next few weeks, leaving you with a smoother, more youthful face.

Obagi®

Obagi® is a two-part skin restoration system that combines medical counseling with innovative products in order to treat the skin from the inside out. It is an excellent way to treat skin problems such as acne, hyperpigmentation, and photoaging. The two elements of Obagi® can be used separately; however, when combined, their effects are much more dramatic and beautifying.

Obagi® Nu-Derm

Obagi® Nu-Derm is a collection of skin treatment products to be used at home. This system works to reduce pore size, control acne, and improve elasticity and skin tone. If you will be having an Obagi Blue Peel®, Dr. Derr generally recommends that you first use the Obagi® Nu-Derm system .

Obagi Blue Peel®

The Obagi Blue Peel® is a light chemical peel that is effective for reducing fine wrinkles, acne scarring, and sun damage. It also reduces the size of large pores and improves the elasticity of skin. The Obagi Blue Peel® is designed to stimulate the skin cells to naturally renew themselves, giving you the radiant glow of your youth.

Glytone®

For patients seeking the most effective alphahydroxy (AHA) skin treatment available, Glytone® is the answer. Easy to use, this at-home program consists of only three products. Patients cleanse and moisturize in the morning and cleanse and exfoliate in the evening. This system can be combined with in-office Glytone® peels to expose and encourage new, beautiful skin.

Facial Laser Resurfacing

Sometimes patients come to Dr. John Derr with problems that cannot be solved with conventional skin care techniques. For these patients, Dr. Derr is pleased to be able to offer facial laser resurfacing, using VersaPulse® laser technology. This laser uses intense bursts of light that remove damaged or discolored skin cells, and is nearly painless. The VersaPulse® laser has a special cool tip that compensates for the heat produced by the laser. Following treatment, most people can expect aftereffects similar to sunburn, including tightness, redness, and some peeling. However, with proper care, these effects will subside within a matter of days.

Laser resurfacing is ideal for a number of conditions and treatments, including:
